First
Year Experience
The First Year Experience or FYE program is comprehensively
designed curriculum that helps first year students’ transition towards
success at Sullivan County Community College. The program is designed to begin
the day before classes start and follow students through their entire first
semester to help with any struggles they may have. The goal of this program
is to act as a helper to first semester students through Orientation and Freshman
Seminar Course work. This allows students to feel comfortable in an academic
setting and allows them to have the ability to ask for guidance as they feel
necessary.
Freshman
Seminar Courses
Sullivan County Community College uses a very academic approach to support your
transition to your first year of college. We use a series of courses that are
designed to help you improve your ability to success in all core courses as
well as enable you to gain basic skills including time management skills, study
skills & career planning. Other topics include cultural diversity, student
development issues and an introduction to campus resources.
At Sullivan County Community College, we use the course prefix IAS (Improving
Academic Success) to indicate classes that are offered by our program. We also
have one specialized course in Hospitality that enables students to gain these
skills as well.
All of the courses listed above are taught by full time faculty or staff who have specific interests in helping first year students succeed. For IAS 1001, Freshman Seminar we offer some major or interest specific sections. Examples include but are not limited to: Business, Sports Management, Communications, Early Childhood Education, Non-traditional students, Criminal Justice, and math & science.
