First Year Experience
The First Year Experience or FYE program is comprehensively designed curriculum that helps first year students’ transition towards success at Sullivan County Community College. The program is designed to begin the day before classes start and follow students through their entire first semester to help with any struggles they may have. The goal of this program is to act as a helper to first semester students through Orientation and Freshman Seminar Course work. This allows students to feel comfortable in an academic setting and allows them to have the ability to ask for guidance as they feel necessary.

We truly believe that no matter whether your future plans are to graduate at SCCC, transfer, or brush up on some skills for work…. this will be the START OF SOMETHING GREAT!

New Student Orientation
Sullivan County Community College conducts new student orientation every semester on the day prior to the first full day of classes. This program is designed for all first-time full time students who enroll at SCCC, however all new students are welcome to attend regardless of the number of credit hours they are enrolled in.
The events of orientation are as described below and are most beneficial to all students. Refreshments will be provided at some time during this program.

Orientation Registration/Welcome – This usually occurs during the hour prior to orientation. Students must stop by the registration table to sign up for Orientation and receive a registration packet of materials.

Introductions – Students will have the ability to hear brief remarks from the Sullivan County Community College President, Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, Dean of Enrollment Management and Student Development, and Student Government President (line-up subject to change based on availability).

Mandatory Freshman Seminar Activities – All students enrolled in Freshman Seminar* are required to participate (attendance will be taken by your instructor). When students register for Orientation they will be provided with detailed information on where they should report for these activities.
*- CUL1001/HON1010/IAS1001/IAS1004 are all considered part of this session

Majors/Information Fair - All students will have the ability to meet faculty from different disciplines, student group representatives, student services staff, and representatives from community agencies who may help them succeed while at SCCC.

Review and Re-take of the Math Placement Exam – Students who placed into and are registered for DMA 0902 (Basic Arithmetic) will have the opportunity to attend a review session taught by a math instructor prior to the beginning of orientation. Students can then retake the placement exam (students must bring a picture ID, #2 pencil, and a copy of their spring schedule to take the test).

Adult Orientation – For students who are returning to school at a non-traditional age, 22 or older, there is an evening of events each Fall semester that helps students readjust to the higher education atmosphere. For further information on this, please contact me and I will send out the information regarding this event.
